Educational programs General EducationThese inservices provide information that is relevant to all staff e.g. changes in polices, procedures, expectations of service delivery, workplace health and safety concerns, and practices. Some education is based on legislation or regional requirements and therefore mandatory e.g. WHMIS, fire safety, and infection control. Direct Care Provider EducationThese inservices inform staff of new equipment, facilitate learning of technical skills, critical analysis and care planning, collaborative approaches that facilitate multi-disciplinary care delivery to patients and their family. Management EducationManagers are encouraged to attend courses in the Regional Management Education program. Additional workshops are offered on site as needed. External EducationThe Educational Resources Bulletin Board is the place to find information about courses offered at other facilities in the Region, and those delivered by private educational organizations that address both professional skills and the development of personal qualities. OrientationGeneral Orientation: All newly hired staff attend a 2-day General Orientation. Staff become aware of corporate values and policies, expectations of staff regarding customer service, team partnerships, and their responsibility for performance competency. Information is provided about workplace health and safety. Staff policies are reviewed. A departmental orientation follows in which the newly hired staff member is buddied with an experienced staff member to learn specific job functions. Nursing Orientation: Registered nurses, in addition to General Orientation, receive a 4-day nursing orientation that includes expectations of partnering with patients and team members, clinical skills, and approaches. Health Care Aide Orientation: Health Care Aides in addition to General Orientation attend a 1-½ day orientation that includes specifics about their role, clinical assessmenst and skills. Patient EducationEducational Resources develops, obtains, and maintains a wide collection of pamphlets, brochures, and videos about common health and disease-related topics. These are distributed to the units upon request for specific patients. Education FundingFunding to attend educational events is provided through hospital education budgets. All full and part-time staff after one year of employment, can apply for a grant to the hospitall Scholarship Fund. Student PlacementsThe hospital welcomes students from a variety of disciplines. Clinical placements are coordinated by the department and the educational facility. Learning opportunities are provided according to the level of student ability and in a manner that enhances skill development and understanding of the discipline role. Nursing studenst who complete their Senior Practicum here are encouraged to seek employment at the Grace.
