The year 2007 marked the 50th anniversary of the Youth Volunteer Program at Grace Hospital. Formerly referred to as “Candystripers”, Grace Hospital in Winnipeg was the first in Canada to have a youth volunteer program.
YOUTH VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Our youth volunteer program, once known as candy-stripers, and a first of its kind in Canada, has been going strong since it began in 1957.
We have always believed that our youth can make a vital contribution to the hospital and the community. Our youth volunteers have a genuine concern for others and wish to give their time and energy to assist hospital staff in carrying out their duties.
This well-established program continues to be a great way to gain valuable work experience and have a positive, personal impact on others.
With a successful scholarship program, we support youth volunteers interested in a health care career who display leadership, responsibility and a commitment to the youth program.
There’s a place just right for you!
At The Grace, youth volunteers:
• Deliver hospital/patient mail
• Deliver patient meals and provide feeding assistance
• Deliver flowers to patients
• Distribute magazines
• Prepare Meals on Wheels
• Work in admitting
• Take the shopping cart to patient wards
• Fill and deliver ice water to patients
• Work in The Muffin Stop
• Deliver newspapers
• Escort patients to Sunday chapel service
What is my commitment?
Youth volunteers are students who are 14 to 17 years old and are willing to commit to the program for one year.
Youth volunteers work after school, weekends, during spring break and in the summer. How often you work and when depends on your schedule and the type of volunteer work you want to do.
We’ll work together to come up with a schedule that works for you and the hospital.
