Telephones

Most patient rooms have telephones. Payphones are located outside the Northwest Café, in the front lobby, in the Emergency waiting area, on every floor and on the 5th floor of the Dorothy Wood Building. Calls for a taxi or Handi-Transit can be made free of charge by using direct-line phones located in the front lobby and Emergency. A telephone for the hearing impaired may be borrowed from Patient Registration. Remember: Lap top computers and all personal communication devices such as cellular phones and pagers are not permitted as they may interfere with the functioning of sensitive medical equipment.

Televisions

Hospitality Network, our provider of patient television service, will be starting a new automated television rental system. Starting February 17, 2010 patients simply call the Hospitality Network Call Centre to order television service. Methods of payment for the automated TV rental service will be Visa or Mastercard; however, we will no longer accept cash or cheques.

Features of the new system include a greater window of time to access television service than previously offered. As well, any patient who is renting a TV and is transferred within the facility may have their service transferred to their new location during the increased call centre hours. Patient family members may call from their homes or offices to activate services for patients without ever visiting the hospital.

The rental rate for television service is $11.00 per day, plus applicable taxes, and we offer long-term rates. To order your television service, please know your room and bed number, and have your credit card ready. From within the hospital simply dial ext. 8677 from your bedside. From outside the hospital, please use our toll-free number 1-866-223-3686 from anywhere in Canada. Call centre hours are 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, excluding statutory holidays. The television service will be activated within a few minutes.

Washrooms

Public washrooms are located on the ground, main and second floors only. Wheelchair accessible washrooms are located on the ground floor, east of the cafeteria, near Grace Cancer Care and on the second floor. At street level, there are washrooms off the front lobby to the west of the elevators. Both the women’s and men’s washrooms at this location have a diaper change station. Remember:  Washrooms in patient rooms are for patient use only.

Library & Patient Information

There are many ways to get health-related information. Nurses can provide brochures if they are available or our education channels (#31 and #32) can be viewed free of charge. Day Rooms/Lounges

For patients who are mobile and may have more than two visitors, there are day rooms/lounges located at the south and north ends of the patient tower floors.

Postal Service

Volunteers deliver in-hospital mail to all departments and post mail for patients.  Volunteers are available to help write letters or read the cards and letters that patients may receive. A Canada Post drop box is located in the front lobby.

Patient Rooms

The type of room a patient receives depends on what is available but every attempt is made to ensure the patient gets the type of room for which they have coverage. There is an extra daily charge for private and semi-private rooms. If a patient requests a private or semi-private room and one is not available, they will be transferred to one as soon as one becomes available.

Sometimes it is necessary to move patients out of their private room. This may be necessary for another patient whose condition is serious or requires infection control, extra space for equipment, constant monitoring, a quiet environment for them and privacy for their family. REMINDER: Visitors are not to lie on patient beds. Washrooms in patient rooms are for patient use only.
